Call sheets

In one of our meetings, our group discussed and filled in the call sheets in preparation for our filming. Here, we have discussed what scene, where, when and what time we will be filming. It also includes other aspects such as the weather and what will be our role in each scene.

Editing and Filming Practice

In one of our seminars, my group were instructed to have a little practice with our filming and editing the scenes. We chose to film a short comedy scene of a handshake that we were planning to incorporate in our film. I took the responsibility of handling the camera and the experience was quite challenging as it was my first time but the clips turned out fine. After looking at the clips, we had come to realise that we would do some few improvements in order for our film turn out to the standard we would like it to be and these improvements include:

  • taking more shots in different angles
  • stop recording once the actor is out of the shot

Overall, the experience of filming and editing was exciting and interesting at the same time and this is what we came up with.

Script Writing 17.03.15

My group mate, Kirsty and I worked on the script in Jennison's building from 2 pm until 2 am. In my opinion, writing the script was not as hard as I expected. This was because we had our storyboard as a guideline in writing our script alongside the research we carried out earlier.

Script Writing Inspiration

In preparation for our script writing, I carried out a few research through BBC and other blogs that will help our group to do the script.

There's one blog that I thought that was really helpful for the script writing and it's a blog from Scott Myers who wrote movies such as K-9, Alaska and Trojan War. In his blog, he stated a 'formula' about three things to do which is to: read some scripts, watch movies and write pages. He stated it in what I feel was very simplified that it is easy to understand. He also advised some few tips in prepping a story such as:

  • Do a genre study of several scripts in a row in one genre
  • watch a movie and do a scene-by-scene breakdown
  • Research
  • Brainstorm
  • Character development
  • Plotting
In addition, I also found the BBC very helpful in preparation for our script writing as it gives some  essential advices that we need to consider while we are writing our script and this includes:
  1. Introduction
  2. Developing an idea
  3. Form and format
  4. Character
  5. Beginning
  6. Middles
  7. Endings
  8. Scenes
  9. Dialogues
  10. Re-writing
I also found some few examples of some script that we can have as an inspiration in writing our script.

Character Profile 04.03.15

Here are clips of the character profiles that some of my group mates took for the auditioning for our film.

Premiere Pro Lab Session 27.02.15

We had a lab session on how to use the editing software that we will be using which is Adobe Premiere Pro. This session took approximately 4 hours but I think that it was very helpful in preparation for our filming as we will be able to edit our scenes.  We learnt how to cut shots, how to alter the audio and how to change the colour temperature of the shots. I personally think that it will be complicated on how to use this software but I actually thought that I did well in this session.

Submitting the Final Treatment 26.02.15

After we have all finished all our parts for the treatment, we all have shared our own part to the group and some people in our group have proofread our bits just in case there are spelling and grammar mistakes before submitting the final treatment. And this is what my group came up with:

FINAL TREATMENT

Location

The Pavilion

This will be where scene 1, scene 4 and scene 5 will be filmed where the main character, Jake will be training for the 'Big Game'.

Parkwood House

This will be where scene 3 will take place where Jake and Naomi will have their big argument.

Parkwood Path

This will be where scene 2 will be filmed where Jake just came from his training and he's making his way home where he will meet Naomi.

Storyboard

Storyboard Inspiration

In one of our lectures, our lecturer have shown us a little video example of how we can do our storyboard in preparation for our movie. It was very helpful for the group as this has given us an inspiration on what to do for our storyboard. In addition, it has also made us feel that we wouldn't need to be clearly detailed with our sketch but instead focus on the shot type of that scene.

Our storyboard

After a few sessions and meetings with the group and looking back at the synopsis of our film, my group have came up with our final storyboard.

Writing the Treatment 18.02.15

So in order for our treatment to be efficiently done, we decided as a team to divide different parts of the treatment. I volunteered to talk about the subject of the film which will mostly be about motivation, support and building self-esteem.

This is what I have came up with:

Subject:As it was stated from our synopsis, our short film will revolve around a young persistent man’s journey in perceiving his upmost goals in his life. Thus, the genre of our film will be sports-drama as the story will be involving the ups and downs of a young rugby player. The main aim of our short film is to inspire our main target audience which are young adults to stay determined to be ahead of their objectives.
Furthermore, the main subject of the film will be about motivation, support and building self-esteem. As the plot of the story will involve in his struggle and perseverance, motivation is one of the key things in order to pursue a goal and this is very important in the field of sports. This is because, without the determination and desire to improving performances, other mental factors such as focus, intensity and confidence would just be meaningless. Therefore, in order for our main character become the best athlete, he needs to be motivated to do what it takes to maximise his ability and this is what we aim our audience to learn from our film.
Another main subject in our film is support; the support that the main character gets from his girlfriend is one of the significant things which makes him inspired to be the best. His girlfriend’s support is very important to him he have never got a recognition with his little achievements from his past.
However there would be a point in which the support he gets starts fading away and this simply ruins his self-esteem and to which it starts having an effect into his motivation. So, we are targeting to tell the audience that building the self-support and self-esteem can bring yourself up and this will enable to bring yourself into your aims because at the end of the day you will just be doing this for yourself.

Movie Influence - If I stay

Last night I have encountered a movie in which I feel has a slight resemblance with our idea for our short film and this is a movie called If I stay. This movie mostly revolves on a young Mia Hall where she experienced an out-of-body experience after a car accident; the movie also transitions back to Mia's early life with her rocker family and meeting her boyfriend, Adam, who also has band like Mia's dad. Mia and Adam are both passionate with music; the only difference is that Mia is passionate with classical music as she plays the cello while Adam was more into rock music. The aspect of the film which I found similar with our idea for the movie was where Adam's band gain more recognition which starts to put a strain on their relationship. While Mia also wants to apply in a prestigious music school called Julliard and this puts more struggles on their relationship. Overall, the movie was very interesting especially its storyline and how it smoothly transitions back to the character's early life. The ending has also a very suspense which makes the viewers think what will happen next. I think that we can get some inspiration in this movie which we can adapt to our own short movie.

Logline

"It's hard to beat a person who never gives up - Babe Ruth"

During our second meeting, we came up with a logline by Babe Ruth which we feel that can relate to our short film.

First Meeting (19th January) & Second Meeting (28th January)

First Meeting - 19th January

In our first meeting, my group mates and I organised our very first meeting where we got to know each other and collaborated ideas for our short film. Then, one of my group mate came up with a brief idea about making an inspirational sports-themed video. It was also a great help that some of my group mates know a few actors that we can possibly include in our short film. On the other hand, I did have hesitations with our idea and felt that it needed more twist and impact, rather being it a generic type of film. But at the end I did hope that we would come up with more ideas throughout this project.

Second Meeting - 28th January

I would say that I enjoyed our second meeting/first seminar in JCS4 where we have improved our idea for our film. We added more details in our story where it's about a guy who does boxing and seem to always be the "Mr. Third" in every competitions. But there'd be a point in which he reaches being second for the first time and this of course makes him happy and feel that he achieved something unreachable in his life. In addition, we also came up with an idea where he has a girlfriend who plays a vital part in his achievements, however the girlfriend is a type of person where she achieves more than his boyfriend. Then, there is a point where both are ready to tell their big news to each other and this leads to a rift between the two as the guy feels that his girlfriend does not care about his achievement and keeps rambling on with her own achievements. This creates a competition with the partners and this of course has a big impact on the guy as it ruins his ego and self-esteem. We have not come up with our ending yet, but we were thinking of a twist at the end. I think the second meeting we had was very successful, thanks to our lecturer and I am hoping we succeed in putting all our ideas in our short film.
